Information and Pictures
Mr. Bojangles the Hush Basset (Basset Hound / Cocker Spaniel mix)
Other Names
Cocker Basset
Description
The Hush Basset is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Basset Hound and the Cocker Spaniel. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

"These are our Basset / Cocker Spaniel cross females shown here at 16 years old. They are littermates. Norma Jean is black and tan) and Lucy is gold."
"These dogs are the most gentle and loving animals we have ever had. They are exceptionally loyal and always looking to please. They were somewhat destructive and difficult as puppies; terrible chewers. However, I believe that a large part of the issue was that we got them as littermates and I was a lousy trainer. Within a couple of years, they settled very well and did well with obedience training. Norma Jean's weakness was always garbage cans.
"Both dogs liked to be with people. They grew up with 3 children and never bit anyone. They enjoyed lying in the sun and going for walks or runs in the field, but have never been overly playful or excitable. Their coats were completely different. The black and tan dog had a sleek and short shiny coat. Lucy had long, thick hair (she sheds).
"They have always been healthy other than some arthritis. They do have long backs and Lucy does require medication now for pain. Lucy is alone now. She has been quite happy for the past 10 months since her littermate died. In fact, she is even more loving. She is a beautiful and happy old dog at 17."
"Elvis, our Hush Basset at 7 months old is the best, playful, loving dog in the world..."
Luna the Hush Basset puppy at 10 weeks old—"She found a spot of sunshine on the patio and posed for the photo! She is black with a tiny white spot on her nose and a white chest and totally gorgeous!"
