5 months old Cocker Spaniel
Steps
-
Be prepared for your Cocker spaniel.- If you have kids you're in luck because Cocker Spaniels are very loving and love children.
- Cocker Spaniels also need a lot of attention, so usually when you leave them at home alone in a crate or locked in a room, they will howl. Unless you've trained your dog to not pee in your bed at night, keep them in a crate next to your bed. If you leave them in the kitchen alone, they most likely will start to howl.
-
Know what to expect from your Cocker spaniel!- If you see your dog wagging his whole hindquarters, don't get worried! Most Cocker Spaniels will wag their whole butt and sometimes sprinkle a little pee when they're excited. This sprinkling may be the reason why Cockers are hard to potty train, but this will be explained later.
-
Learn how to groom your Cocker.- As you most likely know, Cockers are famous for their beautiful long fur and how they are well known as show dogs.
If your dog is starting to look like a caveman, take him/her to the groomer every 2-4 months for a regular grooming. The two most popular cuts are: The Classic Cocker- groomer shaves back, top of head, chest, stomach, and behind but leaves long fur to grow on the legs and in-between the legs. Puppy Cut- Groomer gives dog a full trim all over and leaves dog having short hair.

-
Potty Train your puppy.- If your dog has peed on some newspaper when in their crate, don't throw it out! This scent is a wonderful way to get your dog to go outside.
Take the newspaper your dog peed on, and place it wherever you desire for him/her to go. Over time he/she will understand that this is where they go to relieve themselves. - Don't train your dog to not go inside your house, but train your dog to go outside. Repeatedly take your dog to the same spot until potty trained.

-
Think carefully about breeding your pet.- Before you get your Cocker Spaniel, you will have to decide if you want to breed him/her. If you have picked out a beautiful pedigree, you might want to consider finding a partner for your dog to breed with. But overall, this is your decision. If you have made a final decision not to breed your dog, you should spade/neuter your dog when he/she is 2-4 months old.
