Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Rescue Texas
Several members of rescue groups raised and spent more than $300, 000 to buy Cavaliers at the auction that took place November 22 in Wheaton, Missouri.
Joey Kennedy, writing for AL.com, reported that most of the dogs the rescue groups purchased had flea infestations, some had eye and ear infections, a few had intestinal parasites and one had a hernia.
"I understand the reason many people who love their cavaliers were so willing to open their wallets to put these dogs in loving forever homes, " said Ron Sturgeon, a Fort Worth entrepreneur and long-time supporter of rescue efforts. "But, I am concerned that private groups bidding at auctions like the one in Missouri may be winning a battle but losing the war, " said Sturgeon.
"As dog lovers, we will never understand or accept someone who neglects a dog they are breeding for profit, " said Sturgeon, who shared his concerns about groups raising funds to bid in breeders' auctions in a Facebook post.
"The issue is how to use our limited resources to do the most good, " said Sturgeon. Sturgeon is organizing a group to work on writing a model statute to regulate breeders and auctions and lobbying state legislatures to adopt it.
