Country of Origin

The Cockalier is a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and originated in the United States.

Size

The Cockalier will typically reach heights of 12-15 inches and an average weight of 20-40 pounds. The weight of the Cockalier will depend heavily on that of the parent dogs.

Coat

The Cockalier's coat is soft and fluffy with the characteristic spaniel fringes on the legs and feet. They can come in a variety of colors and markings, but the most popular is the Blenheim marking. This is a white colored coat with spots of various shapes and sizes in a golden red color. The color and markings of the Cockalier will largely depend on the lineage.

Character

The Cockalier breed is a smart breed with friendly personalities. They are very easy-going and calm, however, they will enjoy lots of play with their family. The Cockalier is known to be very well suited for families with children, as they are not one owner dogs. They also get along very well with small pets and other dogs. It is necessary for you to supervise your Cockalier around children if it is on the small side, as they could be injured accidentally during play. This breed is very intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. Housebreaking is no issue for the Cockalier. The Cockalier is quite even tempered, any signs of aggression are atypical of this breed. Additionally, they are not excessive barkers.

Temperament

As stated, the Cockalier is a mix of the Cavalier King Charles and the Cocker Spaniel. A mixed breed dog can have a combination of any of the temperament and characteristics of any breed involved. It is recommended that you thoroughly research all breeds involved in your mixed breed puppy to ensure that you are amenable and prepared for any of the possibilities.

Care

The Cockalier will require regular attention to grooming. Their coat can vary greatly depending on parentage, but they will require regular brushing regardless. Their fine coats will often become tangled which can be very painful for the dog. The Cockalier coat will vary in thickness and texture, and will likely require professional grooming periodically. The Cockalier is susceptible to ear infections, and so a good deal of attention should be paid to cleaning the ears out on a regular basis. The Cockalier enjoys a good swim, so extra care should be taken to dry the ears thoroughly afterwards. The Cockalier can live happily in an apartment, however, they will require extra activity in addition to their regular walk to work off excess energy.

Training

The Cockalier is a loyal, intelligent and eager to please breed. They will be quick to learn and happy to gain your approval. The Cockalier will require a calm, firm and consistent pack leader to prevent them from developing Small Dog Syndrome. It is imperative that your small dog be made to understand that they are not human and do not call the shots. Dogs will often show their displeasure by growling or even nipping and so it is necessary that the dog know the humans in the home rank first.
