Cocker Spaniels are sporting dogs.
They were originally bred to hunt birds.
These days Cocker Spaniels can do many different activities. They are good companions and sensitive therapy dogs. They enjoy retrieving games, and fun activities like flyball, agility, ®Frisbee, and tracking.
Male Cocker Spaniels can grow up to 15 inches tall and weigh between 24 and 28 pounds. Females are usually a little smaller than males.
These relatively small dogs have a beautiful, silky coat that is short on the head and longer on the chest, stomach, legs, and tail. The hair can be straight or wavy.
Cocker Spaniels come in several different colors.
What color is your favorite?
•black
•other solid colors like buff, tan, red, and brown
•parti-color like red and white, black and white, and brown and white.
Cocker Spaniels will shed some. They need to be bathed regularly and brushed several times every week, but they would enjoy it everyday.
The spaniel needs professional grooming every couple of months to keep his coat healthy and looking good.
Cocker Spaniels need exercise quite often.
It would be a good thing to walk your Cocker Spaniels everyday even if he has a yard. Cocker Spaniels are active and like to play games like hide and seek, fetch, and other activities like flyball, and agility, tracking, and obedience.
Cocker Spaniels are cheerful, kind, and gentle. They are playful and affectionate. They like kids and will make a good best friend.
These friendly dogs are often more interested in people than other dogs, so spending time with your Cocker Spaniel will make him a very happy canine!
Cocker Spaniels are very trainable. They love you and they want to learn from you. When you get a pup, let him get used to his new home. When he is a little older, you can start to take him places.
Cockers are alert dogs and are very good at paying attention. This makes them fast learners in obedience. Teaching your dog obedience will help him become a good citizen and help him to have good manners. |
The American Kennel Club says that Cocker Spaniels are the smallest member of the sporting dog family. | ![]() |
All About Cocker Spaniels
(from their kids!)My dog, Valley, is very calm and sweet. She is a Cocker Spaniel. She is obsessed with food and knows exactly where we hide her treats and chews. Sometimes she licks the cabinet door for hours.
She can be very cluttered with her toys because she leaves them everywhere. When I pick them all up and put them in her crate and shut the door without locking it, she will open the door with her claws.
She is very well-behaved but she is terrified of bigger dogs unless she has known them as a puppy. She loves getting their tummies rubbed. Anonymous, Age 13, Nevada USA
