Overview

The American Cocker Spaniel is a medium-sized sporting dog breed. It has a close relation to the English Cocker Spaniel. The name Cocker Spaniel was derived from the word ‘‘woodcock’’ which was the game of the Cocker Spaniels; to hunt woodcocks and the Spaniels were most probably related to Spain. They are well-built dogs with flat or a slightly wavy, silky coat. Its weight is at about 15 to 30 pounds approximately. They have a height of about 14.5 to 15.5 inches. Their life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.

American Cocker Spaniels are lovely, loyal, gentle, and pleasant; they have a keen interest in working for their owners. They are willing, naturally good, and averagely intelligent dogs. This breed is kind, confident, friendly, and very good with children. With great and keen interest, a good socialization, and sufficient obedience training ; they will be able to get along with people, other dogs, and children. They like to be around people or family members. It should never be left alone in a kennel because it is not suitable for this breed. The grooming of this breed is not easy. These dogs require daily exercise and a loving pack leader to live happily. Housetraining is difficult. Training for these dogs is necessary so that they have the small dog syndrome. This dog breed has a bounty of stamina; they will have a great need for exercise on a regular basis. A daily long walk is necessary for them. Bushy thickets should be avoided while on walk because it may tangle the dog’s coat. These dogs are used for hunting and show. American Cocker Spaniels fall in the group of the AKC Sporting and Gun Dog.

History

They were produced from the English Cocker Spaniel and in the 17th century, back then the Cocker Spaniel was brought to America and named as American Cocker Spaniel. In America its name is American Cocker Spaniel and in other regions of world the name is Cocker Spaniel. We know that the American Cocker Spaniel is the offspring of the English Cocker Spaniel. The name Cocker Spaniel derived from the word ‘woodcock’’ which was the game of the Cocker Spaniels to hunt woodcocks and the Spaniels most probably were related to Spain. In 1978 the American Cocker Spaniel dog was recognized by the AKC. The Cocker Spaniel is the father of the English Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel is the Father of the American Cocker Spaniel.

Appearance

The American Cocker Spaniel is a medium-sized , well-built dog, with flat or slightly wavy silky coats. Their hairs are short and fine on the head, and average in length on the body. The coat comes in any solid color, with tan points; black, merle, and parti-color combinations such as white with black, white with black and tan points or whitewith buff or red. The show lines have longer coats than the field lines. They have rounded skulls with a pronounced stop and a broad, deep, squared muzzle; and have scissors bite teeth. It has round, little almond shaped eyes with dark eyeballs. Blue eyes may be found on merle Cocker Spaniels. The ears of this breed are low-set and long with feathers. The slightly sloppy top line is from front to back. These dogs have straight legs and a docked tail. In some European countries the docking tail is illegal. The dewclaws of these dogs may be removed.

Weight and Height

The American Cocker Spaniels weight is 15 to 30 pounds approximately. They have a height of 14 1/2 to 15 1/2 inches.

Temperament

They are lovely, loyal, gentle, and pleasant and have a keen interest in working for their owner. It is a willing, naturally good, and averagely intelligent breed. American Cocker Spaniels are kind, confident, friendly and good with children. They love to interact with everyone and enjoy a lovely trainer. With great zeal and keen interest, good socialization and sufficient obedience training; they will be able to get along with people, other dogs and children. It should never be left alone in the kennel because it is not suitable for this dog breed. They may become stressed very easily through rough treatment, loud noises, and bad handling. These dogs are difficult to housetrain, but may also be very easy to train. The standard breed of American Cocker Spaniels defines these dogs; the ideal dog breed to have; a good temperament having no suggestions of timidity.

Behavior with children and other pets

They have a keen interest in working; they are good household pets and gundogs. These are loving, gentle, cheerful, loyal, energetic, and happy dogs with average intelligence. If they get enough socialization and training they can be good with children and pets that they are raised with.
